About Sound Out

Sound Out Communications is a media production, training and distribution company, working with video, audio and still images.

Production:  The mandate of Sound Out is to produce lively, and informative programs and material for the internet in both video and audio.

Training: Equally important, we teach people and companies how to become their own producers.

Distribution:  We use new tools of social media to get your productions out to people on the internet, their Ipods, cellphones, GSP’s and the whole range of new technologies.  Because getting your inspired words, images and stories to the ears and eyes of the world is just as important as the production itself.

Who is Sound Out Media?

Sound Out Media was established in 2007 by Victoria Fenner, its president and creative director.  Working with a talented team of writers, sound artists, videographers and photographers,  she is an excellent strategic planner and project manager who optimizes results in a cost-effective manner.

All with artistic flair and style.

With a degree in Communication Studies, Victoria has worked in radio and television broadcasting for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation in various capacities – on air writer/broadcaster, production technician and producer. She is a talented producer who has an ability to translate ordinary experience into a compelling story which engages listeners and viewers. Victoria is also a practicing artist working in creative sound and documentary production who is recognized by the Canada Council for the Arts and The Ontario Arts Council.

As a journalist, she has produced dozens of interviews, documentaries and news reports. She takes a creative approach towards sound making, and uses innovative production techniques that go above and beyond the traditional.

She believes that no matter what kind of communications we are doing (corporate, business, personal), it is all rooted in story. The ability to engage our viewers and listeners is enhanced when the story is told skillfully and persuasively.

She is an adventurer at heart who will go wherever her work leads her. Among her most noteworthy contracts are: ten days as a consultant in a small village north of the Arctic Circle; a training course for Radio Netherlands teaching management skills to radio station managers from Africa, Asia, Latin America and Eastern Europe; and a creative sound workshop for radio producers at a news organization in Nairobi, Kenya.

Above all, she lives and works on the leading edge — she understands new media, new technology and especially how it relates to an organization or business’s ability to reach new markets. Her flexibility and expansive approach to people and places where she works makes her a skilled listener and communicator who can quickly adapt to today’s rapidly changing world.

What others say about Victoria Fenner …

“I have known Victoria Fenner as a professional colleague in radio production for about two years. And before that I was aware of and was very impressed by her work in the field of production and promotion of creative forms of audio expression. Victoria is an energetic and inspirational person who knows the field of audio art very well” 2003. Steve Wadhams, Senior Producer, Outfront, CBC Radio.

“I’ve had the pleasure of working with Victoria Fenner for at least three years. Her audio editing and production skills are peerless, and she also has the ability to see the larger scope and mission of a communications project. As well, Victoria has been honing her social media skills, so she can help clients to reach a broader audience with their audio productions. I would recommend Victoria wholeheartedly as a talented professional with excellent skills, a warm and friendly manner, and a strong dedication to deadlines and budgets.”  Donna Papacosta, Trafalgar Communications

“Victoria Fenner was a breath of fresh air in the Appalachian Mountains with her creative and innovative approach to sound recording. Her workshops were energetic and technically solid, leaving participants with lots of inspiration and a clear, step-by-step approach to capturing the sounds of our lives. She has a keen eye and ear and understanding for the use of radio as a vehicle for social change. She understood the grave socio-economic problems we are dealing with in this isolated area of the country. She is sorely missed!” 2008….Angelyn DeBord. Storyteller, Director, playwright and activist, Appalshop Media Arts Centre, Whitesburg, Kentucky

“Dear Victoria – On behalf of Obansawin-Irwin Consulting Inc., Community Radio Ontario Program and all the delegates in attendance at “Sharing Communications Resources: Southern and Central Ontario Native Community Radio Workshop”, I offer my sincere thanks to you for your participation as a resource person in our conference. Your contribution in all aspects of radio, especially how to balance the diverse needs of a community while nevertheless serve them well, was especially enlightening, and your expertise was immediately evident” 1995. Brad Long, Obonsawin-Irwin Consulting Inc.

Selected Reviews

(Review of “The Edge of Extreme” - soundscape of Cambridge Bay, north of the Arctic Circle in Nunavut)

“Master soundscape artist Victoria Fenner proves you don’t need narrative to tell place stories. I’m blown away by the shear luxury of hearing 7:47 of Arctic Circle life. There’s a gentle native expansiveness and unhurried emptiness occasionally stamped by the artist as she plays with and in the sound environment. Broadcast this and help audiences learn to hear as babies again. Transcendent naive / outsider / folk music ending - beautiful as a setting arctic sun.”

“Beautifully recorded and mixed sound. Perfection. Nothing less. Fenner created an exquisite audio landscape with this piece. I want to go there now!”

“Victoria Fenner makes a lot of soundscapes for the radio - and everyone I listened too made me want to listen to another one. She’s great great great.” - Benjamin Walker, Transom - a showcase for new radio work
